Shira Geffen is a creator who works with glass, a material she describes as carrying memory. For her, the glass begins as a hot, liquid material, surrendering to the form forced upon it. But as it cools, the stretch marks and contractions that remain become visual evidence of the journey it has undergone.
In her work process, Geffen uses a “pulling” technique. In this process, hot glass is stretched downwards towards the floor, and just before it cools, she lifts the edge of the glass back up towards the sky. This creates unique arches and textures that embody the tension between free movement and the stabilization of the material.
The exhibition title “Winds of Sky” seeks to echo the living movement of the glass – the movement of pulling and returning, the potential inherent in it to be flexible, to shatter, to surrender to the wind. Like an unpredictable gust, the glass moves between states of matter and responds to external and internal forces, leaving traces of that dynamic fluctuation.
Geffen’s works explore the dissonance between the creative process and the presented result. She describes how the physical tension of the glass reflects feelings and dissonances in life itself. Memories and points of nostalgia become an essential component in her creation, where each layer and mark tells an additional story.
Geffen’s glass sculptures are placed on an old, raw ironing board – an object associated with labor, repetitiveness, and attention. The contrast between the fragile glass and the functional and industrial surface highlights the dialogue between a mechanical process and a one-time creation, between methodical craftsmanship and a dynamic moment of movement and life.
“Winds of Sky,” Geffen’s first solo exhibition since completing her studies in the Ceramics and Glass Design Department at Bezalel in 2023, seeks to expose the dialogue between material and movement, between change and stagnation, and the echo of the tension between earth and sky, as expressed in the works of Shira Geffen.
